Wind Energy For Your Residence: Benefits And Drawbacks

Inside of a recent energy-related account called “The Benefits of 20% Wind Energy by 2030,” it says we could very well eliminate 15,200 million pounds of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030 in addition to at least 2 times that amount before we hit 2050.

If all of us were to grow our usage of wind energy by just 20%, we would furthermore be able to decrease water utilization inside the electric powered industry by 8% (4 trillion gallons). This would lower natural gas usage and prices by 12%, saving consumers approximately $130 billion.

Clearly, methods to reduce energy costs are now front and center.

Practical Benefits in Favor of Wind Energy

While considering wind power benefits and drawbacks, we will additionally weigh the benefits of making use of turbine wind power. To begin with, wind mills supply a clean domestic supply of energy.

The earth’s wind won’t ever cease from blowing, thus supplying a limitless source of electric power if we funnel it appropriately using the appropriate backup generators. This freely available form of energy will not produce greenhouse gases, create radioactive waste products or discharge pollutants either.

In comparison to the sun’s source – geothermal and biomass power – wind power is fairly affordable. The United States DOE predicts that alternative wind power could run only 4 to 6 pennies per kilowatt hour within the upcoming years.

Specifically Who Benefits?

Benefits from utilizing wind power are not only pertaining to governing bodies or corporate people, but also for considerable numbers of citizens and population centers that additionally tap into substantial alternative wind energy generators attached to an electrical grid.

Today’s innovations are targeted at building newer designs in order that individual people and businesses have the ability to incorporate these designs on their own property as well. Farmers and landowners could quite possibly sell a piece of their property to be developed as wind farms, which adds a monetary motivation.

Moreover, wind farms and business facilities draw a number of jobs to a local community, such as administrators, assembly workers, engineers, environmental impact assessment surveyors, managers, mechanical operators, safety personnel, trainers, and truckers.

Downside Factors

But how about a few of the disadvantages presented by wind generated energy?

Some people perceive the appearance of tall collections of wind generators to be ugly and unnatural.

Additionally, the University of Massachusetts has reported that wind power turbine generators can be pretty noisy when wind speed is reduced. They tell us that the sound from each different turbine is roughly the same as one automobile traveling at 70 mph.

The sound has also been described as a “brick wrapped in a hand towel tossed around inside a dryer for clothing,” and “as though somebody was mixing cement in the air,” or “like a locomotive that never reaches its destination.” As one US citizen stated, “Wind turbines don’t make for great neighborhood friends.”

In a few Canadian scientific studies, it has been discovered that people dwelling in close proximity to windmill farms complained of enduring debilitating headaches, even though this possible threat hasn’t at this point been scientifically verified.

Whether or not a windmill is in your sights, creative energy saving strategies are hot on people’s minds.

  • Eric says:

This author does not seem to make a distinction between large and small wind turbines. Small turbines ‘for your residence’ do not make as much noise as what is described above “as though somebody was mixing cement in the air”, etc.

It’s more like, “the wind moving past the buildings made more wind than the turbine, a mere 100ft away.” (USA Proven Energy 2.5kW turbine owner)

Large turbines with 300ft rotor diameters and massive gear boxes are not things that I would choose to live near. However, a small turbine sited in a good wind location on residential or agricultural property is something much more enticing. There’s a huge difference!
