Renewable Energy – Lesson 1 – Introduction to Renewable Energy

With just a little bit of research, one can quickly determine that there is a strong and growing groundswell of interest in renewable energy. Leaving politics out of it, many people are simply interested in making their homes more energy efficient and thereby saving money on heating and cooling bills.

Renewable energy generally includes solar power, wind power, and biofuels. For all categories, there are ways to integrate them into your daily life and into your home to make yourself more energy efficient. These changes will certainly save you money over the long run–and in some case in the short term—but they will also help reduce the massive strain that is being placed on the planet in general.

There are a large number of companies, both large and small, that advertise their specific product or service that fits into the renewable energy industry. There are a great number of businesses that manufacture, install and repair all types of solar panels. Likewise, there are a corresponding number of businesses that sell, service and install systems designed to capture wind power. Still more companies are out there manufacturing and selling various forms of biofuels. Biofuels include bio diesel and ethanol. There are also a very few companies engaged in research and development of hydrogen furnaces which run on biomass, often barnyard waste. While all these companies are in business to make money, the combined effect of what they are selling and producing is a positive one for the environment. Renewable energy is an undeniable fact of life for us now, and we all have a form of social responsibility to do our part to advance it into the mainstream. Regardless if the motivation is purely financial—to either make or save money—the end result is the same; a reduction in the emissions and pollution produced by traditional fossil fuels, and a cleaner, more sustainable environment and economy.

Trends toward renewable energy are taking hold on a more widespread basis every day. One will hear more frequent mention of terms like “green construction” or “green companies”. These terms refer to building houses in an environmentally friendly manner, making as much use of renewable energy technology as possible and to businesses that have adopted an organized and serious policy to reducing their environmental impact through use of renewable energy.

Renewable energy has become such a popular subject, that it is seen as a constant theme in contemporary media, including major movies, TV programs and in music. The growing awareness and concern with environmental issues is fueling the fundamental shift toward being more environmentally conscious and toward using renewable energy whenever possible. There is still much pollution and waste in the world today, but there has never been such a high and growing level of awareness and motivation to change our fundamental lifestyles in order to save and cure our climate. Renewable energy is a fundamental piece of the puzzle for not only a healthy planet, but a healthy life as well.

Green Energy and Its Uses in the Modern World

Green energy is referred to as the method of generating power. Most of the time this is known as electrical power which is acquired through resources that are renewable. Green energy can be compared to that of fossil fuels. The emissions from fossil fuels work by creating toxic hydrocarbons which cause us to become ill. The water, wind and sun are alternative energy sources.

When green energy is produced from the sun, we call this solar energy. Solar energy is retained through the use of solar panels. While there are two different types of solar panels, each one uses technology in creating new energy. Solar water heaters are referred to as new energy panels which absorb sunlight and then transfer this to water by heating it. After this, photovoltaic panels work by transforming the radiation into electrical energy. To get the best efficiency through the use of green energy, homeowners are advised to install the panels on top of the roof so they face south at 30 degree angles horizontally. They should never be placed near shady spots or around trees, buildings or chimneys.

One of the more popular sources of green energy are the use of solar energy systems which heat water. When solar panels are connected to a hot water system of a house, these panels can supply in excess of half the water needed per year. Solar collector of choice are typically flat plates or tubes.

For many years, wind has served as a great source of alternatate energy. Originally, the purpose of wind energy was to help pump the water at grain mills. There have been two major improvements in wind turbines since then. The use these wind turbines has resulted in capturing wind to generate electricity within high wind areas. In California, there are many wind turbines on hills. The electricity generated from these is exported for local grid use and standalone applications.

There are enormous potentials in the use of wind energy onshore and offshore when it comes to farming. This form of energy is the cleanest and safest of any method of renewable energy. The UK has the largest source of alternative energy around. In the UK, they are using small batteries which charge the wind spectrum along with wind farms. The wind farms are successful in producing large amounts of electricity. Wind only produces about 1 percent of the world’s entire green energy. The potential is much greater of how much could actually be produced. The percentage of use should drastically change within the twenty years because of rising energy costs. It is not complicated to produce wind energy from wind.

Neither wind or solar energy produce any pollution chemicals or emissions into our environment, which is quite obvious. The only draw back of using this type of energy is how some people find the appearance of wind turbines to be very unattractive. There are others who find the appearance of wind turbines very attractive to the eye. It’s all a matter of opinion.

Do you have suggestions on recycling activities that a community can undertake?

I am planning to start a recycling campaign, a sustainable one, in our community. Please do give me suggestions on simple yet realistic recycling activities. Your suggestions will surely help. Merci beaucoup!

The Most Underrated Green Building Device

If you search for green building devices on the internet, you will find a tremendous number of links for “gizmo green” gadgets. These are generally technology-based items that you can install in or on your existing home or entire systems used to build new “green” houses. While we applaud the changing mindset that takes sustainability into consideration, the public is constantly misinformed by manufacturers about the true green and sustainable value of many of these products, touting items that will end up in landfills several years down the road as they break down or become technologically obsolete. The practice is common enough to have garnered the term “greenwashing”. As a result, we don’t jump on the bandwagon of promoting many of these technology driven devices, with the exception of a few items such as instant hot water heaters, solar attic fans, energy efficient appliances and programmable thermostats that we feel have earned their place in our own projects.

Being proponents of historic homes and traditional design in general, we instead choose a more tried and true method for living sustainably for our Favorite Green Building Device: the Porch. No manufacturer is out promoting the simple and attractive traditional shaded porch, so it does not get its fair share of green building credit, but porches can have such an impact on building energy savings that it amazes me whenever a new building publicized as “green” but has no porch shading any facade (but preferably the south) implemented into the design. Porches have been employed by generations to provide a cool space to sit out on hot days, capture breezes and shading the building interior. They are considered a passive solar technique; they require no additional energy input to operate but can cut cooling costs tremendously by reducing heat gain in the building interior. In addition, porches (when constructed properly) are easy to maintain, never become obsolete and enhance the architecture of your home as an added bonus.

Other traditional building techniques also come in a runner-ups in our list of Favorite Green Building Devices: operable windows and doors with screens, wide overhanging eaves, and high ceilings.

Renewable Energy Options For Data Centres

There is increasing pressure on the IT industry to adopt green business practices by making use of renewable energy. This pressure not only comes from outside factions such as environment organisations, but from within the industry itself, as the global energy crisis threatens spin out of control and send the cost of power soaring. Data centres are notorious power drains, which makes them the most obvious starting place when it comes to addressing renewable energy.

According to John Timmer from Ars Technica, set up costs, running costs and stability are three of the most important factors in determining the credibility of a power source. Timmer believes that renewable energy has the edge over carbon or fossil fuels because, even though the initial set up costs might be higher, the running costs are significantly lower than traditional energy sources. In addition, the price of renewable energy isn’t likely to rise with demand, which means that running costs will remain relatively stable. Renewable energy is also less likely to suffer from periodic interruption owing to political instability or controversial world events.

As renewable energy becomes achievable, location will become an important determining factor in building data centres. We have already seen Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! choose the Pacific Northwest in the US for some of their data centres, so that they can benefit from the region’s use of cheap hydropower. Upstate New York has also become a popular site for data centres, as it makes use of hydropower from Hydro-Quebec.

While hydropower is relatively stable and constant, one of the major problems with other renewable energy sources is that they are only periodically available. The sun only shines for a limited number of hours per day and the wind doesn’t always blow, which means that the storage of renewable energy is of paramount importance. This is where hydroelectric power has the advantage, as storage systems have been in use for a long time already. Energy (in the form of water) is simply pumped into reservoirs during off-peak hours, which is then used when demand begins to climb.

Hydroelectric power systems have one major disadvantage, however, and that is the fact that they make use of fresh water, which is not always in abundant supply. Advances in desalination could play an important role here, however, by neatly circumventing the problem.

Techniques for storing solar energy have also been used for years, which makes this a viable alternative for data centres. Another factor that plays into the hands of data centre owners is the fact that the sun shines during peak usage times, so power supply isn’t such a major issue at night.

According to John Timmer and Ars Technica, other options include charge storage, which is still experimental, chemical storage, particularly with the use of hydrogen, compressed air, which requires convenient, airtight geological formations and thermal storage. Iceland currently makes use of a combination of hydro and geothermal power, while an American data centre company claims to use the wind to generate enough power to keep all its systems running smoothly.

However you look at it, the business of renewable energy is big news in the world of IT. And as companies continue to grow, and demand for data storage continues to rise, renewable energy is likely to play an increasingly important role in IT business considerations.

Go Green, Reuse and Recycle Goods and Materials

Pre-consumer waste is the constant reintroduction of most all manufacturing scraps into the manufacturing process. Such a process is mainly used by large industries, but most of the companies using this process are not genuinely recycling. Post-consumer waste, on the other hand, is our garbage. You can reduce your post consumer waste by choosing recyclable items. This is the best way of insuring your purchases will be recycled. The more recyclable products you purchase, the more serious industries will have to reconsider their not-so-green production processes.

It is your turn to support the current recycling efforts. Purchasing products that contain post-consumer waste is a great way to start saving the environment. Doing so, will curb the constant waste of natural resources. By utilizing your purchase power for green products, you help protect virgin and natural resources which would be wasted by purchasing from a non-green company. Resources are scarce and should be treated as that. Going green should be your way of saying you don’t want to waste any resources any more.

While doing your shopping in your normal routine, make an effort to purchase products that are using recycled materials. The use of such recycled material has no effect on product itself. All it takes is the awareness of such recycled materials. When buying your groceries, check the labels to find out if the material is recyclable or not. Consider looking for the latest techniques and green gadgets in order to make sure you will be provided with recyclable materials. Search local centers that deal with the recycling process. Taking the time will help you become more aware of such products and materials. Efforts to seperate recyclable materials is always a great way to help in reusing materials. The best way to reduce your contribution to post consumer waste is by making sure no natural resources have been used in as many of the products you purchase as possible.

Becoming more aware of your ability to grow as a green shopper is the best way to reduce your carbon footprint immediately. Such purchases are cost effective as well as environmentally friendly. Going green has never been so easy and it is time you and your family become green consumers. Instilling such shopping qualities in our younger generation will help ensure our quality of life on this planet for as long as possible. Preserving our planet by avoiding post consumer waste is an easier process than it sounds. Check the labels the next time you go out, and recycle your used materials. The more resources we have in the recyclable circulation the better. Such efforts can be contagious. Certain states have incentives established to encourage recycling. Find a local recycling center near you. Make some money and go green at the same time.

The Advantage of Renewable Energy, and the Challenges

As fossil fuels diminish, the advantage of renewable energy is quickly becoming more understood. The population of the earth is growing and with that growth additional pressure is placed on the already depleting energy sources commonly used like fossil fuels.

While there are plenty of advantages to Mother Earth that renewable energy sources provide, there come some disadvantages as well. In order to shift from our dependence on fossil fuels, we need to discover ways to minimize the challenges so that it becomes more possible for everyone who wishes to use renewable energy sources.

The main sources of renewable energy include solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower.

Solar Energy

One of the most utilized forms of renewable energy is solar power collection. Solar power harvests the sun radiation and heat and converts these into electricity that can be used to power a home or business. The excess energy can also be fed into the electrical grid of a local utility company for credit and possible payment. While solar energy has very little impact on the Earth when installed on existing structures, there are some limitations associated with its use.

Solar energy can only be harvested optimally when the sun is shining. Changes in weather like rain, snow or cloudy weather can reduce or eliminate the amount of energy harvested. In some parts of the world, solar panels are not optimal due to consistent bad weather and few sunny days.

Wind Energy

For some parts of the world, wind energy is a fantastic source of supplemental electrical energy. Wind farms are popping up left and right collecting enough energy to support entire communities and small towns. While wind farms leave a very small impact on the Earth, the upkeep and initial cost is often higher than other alternative energy choices.

The upfront investment for harvesting wind energy can range from $40,000 to $70,000 for a 10 kilowatt system. On average, it is estimated that a wind farm will break even on these upfront costs in about 17 years. Another cost associated with wind energy systems is maintenance. While professional wind farms hire technicians to maintain the turbines, a residential system may be costly to maintain.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is considered one of the least polluting types of alternative energy. The advantage of renewable energy harvested as heat is the lower cost of maintenance with a high expected energy yield. The upfront cost of establishing a geothermal plant is huge and there is always the chance that the heated energy source is not as renewable as once thought.

Advanced drilling techniques are needed to establish a connection with the Earth’s prime energy source, heat. The heat is harvested through deep holes in the Earth which leaves some questioning the true impact on the planet. Though the carbon footprint of geothermal farming is minimal, the area of ground needed to establish a working plant will certainly destroy local animal and wildlife habitat.

Hydropower Energy

The power of water has long been used to produce electricity. The energy is often converted with 80% to 90% efficiency which makes hydropower one of most beneficial alternative energy sources. The advantage of renewable energy is a constant supply of power and hydropower is no different. While hydropower is effective wherever it is used, some areas with infrequent rainfall and rivers that dry up during the hot seasons would probably not benefit from hydropower generators.

Green Power – Green Energy Alternatives For the Future of the Planet

Anyone who is environmentally minded should be thinking about green power especially with the depletion of fossil fuels being imminent. Aside from the fact that we are simply running out of them and the price is becoming exorbitant, fossil fuels pollute the environment and there is just no excuse to be rely on them going forward.

Green energy sources are a much better bet for the future. Energy from these sources is sustainable and renewable – things like the water, the wind in the sun will never run dry and if we use them properly and responsibly we can be assured to have an infinite supply of energy that will not harm our environment.

Green power sources include the following:

Water

There’s actually several applications of water when it comes to power. You’re probably familiar with the Hoover Dam, which produces energy by running power through the Dam. In a similar application, one can actually use the current of a river to produce power. Additionally, scientists are now researching using the power of the tide as well is the power of waves for sustainable energy production.

Sun

Solar power is probably what comes to mind first when you think of renewable energy. This type of power uses the radiation from the sun to produce energy. Solar power can be as simple as having solar panels on your home or as complicated as a solar power plant that generates electricity for a town. Solar power relies on solar panels that collect the radiation from the sun and turned into energy. Once collected, it can be used for your home’s needs right away or stored in batteries for later use.

Wind

Windmills have been used for ages, but today’s wind turbines are a far cry from the scenic windmills of Holland. Be that as it may, wind can be a powerful energy producer and there are many turbine farms, as well as individual turbines for single family homes, throughout the US that help in renewable energy production that doesn’t produce any pollutants.

Biomass

Biomass actually refers to any biological material either living or recently dead. Technically fossil fuels could be considered biomass but they’ve been dead for so long that their structure is changed and they are not quite in the same category as things like wood. Burning wood or sugarcane is considered biomass fuel and since we can replant these things they are considered renewable. While they do cause carbon dioxide to be released into the air, the live versions of these actually absorb carbon dioxide so if you are replanting as much wood as you burn the net pollution would be negligible.

Looking towards the future, green power is definitely the way to go. Certainly, we haven’t researched these alternatives as much as we should have in the past but now it is obvious that we must come up with a different solution to meet our energy needs. Hopefully research will increase on all these fronts and we will soon be able to produce energy in a clean and renewable manner that will serve us for generations to come.

An ipod offers a constructive alternative while you are in holding waiting for your travel plans to resume.

#4 Trigger Inspirational Moments

Studies have shown that music can actually increase your brain activity. Traveling with an ipod also encourages that same benefit by keeping your neurons triggering on a regular basis. Even though you may not realize it, your brain is processing the rhythms and musical sequences in a way that is inspirational. Do ipods actually make you smarter? Well, that might not be a question that is easily answered.

#5 Help Start Conversations

With the wide array of song selections, video samples, and podcasts available on the average ipod, there is a sure bet that you can find some interesting topics of conversation. Sharing headphones and listening to music together is a common way to open up discussions about musical groups and entertainment in general. Some podcasts offer briefings on relative news items and global issues that can also help you start an interesting and educational discussion.

CONS:

#1 Appear to be Anti-Social

Even though ipods can be used as valuable conversation starters, they can also deter social communication all together. When you put a pair of earphones in your ears, you block out most of what is going on in the world around you. As a result, you create a bubble around yourself that can appear to be anti-social. Additionally, since you have an ipod to occupy your time, so you might not care to try to interact with others.

#2 Provide a Source of Distraction

When you travel during a summer vacation, you are probably using a bus, train, plane, or car as a source of your transportation. Ipods can be a big distraction, especially if you are the one driving a car. You might not hear horns honking or sirens blasting as other drivers speed around you. Additionally, traveling with an ipod makes it difficult to answer gate attendant’s questions or hear instructions given by a driver or pilot.

#3 Can Become Uncomfortable

With new versions of the ipod, modern advancements in earphones have also emerged. Unfortunately, even the best earphones tend to get uncomfortable after a couple of hours of use. The plastic and foam covers can cause your ears to become irritated and itchy after prolonged use. Resting your head on a pillow or a door frame can also increase the amount of discomfort to increase over time.

#4 Could get Lost or Stolen

Nothing can wreck a summer vacation faster than having a valuable item get lost or stolen. Ipods are certainly no exception to this rule. With the effort it takes to select and download songs, videos, and podcasts, a lost or stolen ipod can seem even more devastating. Since ipods are small and easy to lose or steal, traveling with one can seem a bit risky.

#5 Might Suffer Mechanical Issues

As with any other piece of technology, ipods have their mechanical faults and failures. Forgetting to charge your ipod can be a source of irritation during a vacation travel day. Similarly, skipped songs, electronic malfunction, and broken components can cause your ipod to become more of a hassle than a pleasure. When you travel, you don’t usually have access to specialists who can help fix the problems making ipod difficulties even more frustrating.

In summary, traveling with an ipod certainly has its pros and cons. The benefits provide you, an average ipod user, with entertainment and constructive activities that you might not otherwise have. On the contrary, ipods can also be a source of frustration that offers anti-social activity during a summer vacation. With almost everything in life, you will have to decide whether the good outweighs the bad.
