Has a Shift to Green Energy Produced More Jobs?
An evening’s research on green energy, government spending, and the job market led me to a solid conclusion: I don’t know.
Obviously, renewable green energy would be good for the planet, and money is being spent on it with what some term “abandon.” One green energy program at the Department of Energy grew from a budget of $1.7 billion in 2008 to a budget of $18 billion in 2009.
But has it created new jobs?
The wind industry, with about 85,000 people employed in some capacity, seems to have held steady, with jobs merely being shifted from one area to another. In 2009 the construction sector employed an additional 500 workers due to increased installation of new wind turbines. It also employed another 1,000 in operations and management positions. But… 1,500 manufacturing jobs were lost in 2009 due to the credit crisis and the number of turbines produced in 2008.
Since 2007 there have been 100 new, announced or expanded manufacturing facilities that could supply more than 19,000 new wind manufacturing jobs – when the facilities come on line. However, even if all the announced facilities actually do come on line, that isn’t going to happen until 2012.
All 50 states do provide some jobs in the wind industry. They range from turbine and turbine component manufacturing to construction, installation and maintenance of wind turbines, legal and marketing services, transportation, and logistics.
Texas leads the nation in total wind capacity and in largest wind farms installed, while Iowa leads in terms of the percentage of electricity from wind power. Iowa gets 14% of its power from the wind. Thirty-four additional states have utility-scale wind projects.
Worldwide, approximately 500,000 people are employed in the wind industry – with only 17% of those jobs being in the U.S.
What about that stimulus money that’s supposed to be creating jobs?
The Treasury Department anticipated the distribution of about $3 billion in renewable energy grants by the end of 2010, and that figure was surpassed by April.
Research didn’t actually reveal where the bulk of it is going, but I did learn something interesting. While small businesses (those with 500 or fewer employees) have created 64% of the new jobs over the past 15 years, small business received only 23% of the dollars expended toward renewable energy projects. No wonder we aren’t seeing an increase in jobs.
We do know that some of it is going to major chemical corporations such as Dow Chemical. There it is being used for research, development, and manufacture of items such as solar shingles and an advanced auto battery built to use clean energy technology. I found no mention of new or additional jobs created to facilitate these projects.

Recycling Plastic – Facts You Need to Know
If you have heard about the Plastic Continent — the floating island of plastic twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean — then you understand how crucial it is to recycle plastic. Different Types of Plastic
Look at the underneath side of a plastic bottle or plastic container. Inside the familiar reduce, reuse, recycle triangle (“chasing arrows”) logo is a number between one and seven. This number indicates what kind of plastic that container is made from. Some plastics are easy to recycle, but other plastics are much harder to recycle. As a result, most municipal recycling facilities only recycle the easiest plastics: plastics 1 and 2. What happens to plastics 3 through 7? At some recycling facilities, these are gathered until they have enough to send to a larger recycling facility that does recycle these types of plastics. But at other recycling facilities, the same thing happens to plastics 3 through 7 as what would have happened at your house if you didn’t have that handy recycling bin: it goes to the landfill, or the Pacific’s Plastic Continent.
Plastics #1 and #2
Plastic #1 is polyethelyne terephthalate (PET). This is the most commonly used plastic, and it’s the easiest to recycle. Your plastic soda bottle, salad dressing bottle, and cooking oil bottle are probably all made from PET. More than 2.3 billion pounds of PET are recycled annually.
Plastic #2 is high density polyethelene (HDPE). Most milk jugs, detergent bottles, and many food containers are made from HDPE. Unfortunately, some plastics marked with a #2, such as yogurt cups, are not actually recyclable. This is because other chemicals have been added to the plastic in order to mold it into the desired shape. These additives make recycling some of these #2 items basically impossible.
Plastics #1 and #2 make up 96% of all the plastic bottles produced in the United States. Nevertheless, 80% of plastic bottles still wind up in a landfill, even though 80% of Americans have access to a method for recycling these bottles.
Plastic #3 through #7
The rest of the plastics make up pretty much everything that’s not a plastic bottle. Just think of all the plastics in your home — your toothbrush, cling wrap, plastic bowls, plastic cups, drinking straws, last night’s leftovers, that almost-impossible-to-open package your new iPhone came in, your computer, your DVD cases… plastic is everywhere.
These plastics can all be categorized as the plastics #3 through #7. None of them are particularly easy to recycle, so even though your recycling guy will take it from your curb, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will become tomorrow’s soda bottle. However, by researching recycling facilities in your area, you can find places to recycle these less common plastics.
The Bottom Line When it Comes to Plastic Recycling
Plastic is much harder to recycle than other materials. Because it breaks down during the recycling process, it can only be recycled so many times — this is why many recyclers prefer so-called “virgin plastics”, or plastics that haven’t been recycled before because they make a better product. That means that even if you do the best you can to recycle all your plastics, some of them might still wind up in the dump.
The clear conclusion we must draw is that even the most conscientious recycling is not enough when it comes to plastics: ultimately, we have to reduce our consumption. The process of producing plastics, many plastics themselves, and the aftermath of plastic use can all be described as toxic. Nearly all manufacturing processes for the different types of plastic listed above involve some degree of toxicity, and as these plastics disintegrate in landfills or in the ocean, these toxic chemicals find their ways back into our soils, our water, our food, and our bodies.
So please recycle plastic. But better yet, stop buying plastic wherever possible.

Mounting Of Crystals At Solar Panels
There was developed a way to mount tiny silicon crystals for solar panels.
The complexity in this case is such that in large systems the force of gravity makes it easy to mount the items as necessary, but on a microscopic scale, when the linear dimensions of each element is thinner than a human hair, it’s not so easy. There begin to interfere outside forces, such as magnetic and electrostatic. For such dimensions, elements, that begins to play a greater role than gravity.
To overcome the difficulties, there was designed a flexible substrate a thin layer of copper coated polypropylene terephthalate (PET). On the substrate through the same distance there is engraved area, the size of which coincides with the size of silicon crystals. Ready-made substrate was lowered into a bath of molten solder, which covered the exposed area of copper foil. Each silicon crystal is of a cube with sides of 20-60 microns, one of which was gilded. On the silicon side suffered a hydrophobic coating (water repellent), whereas at a gilt side – hydrophilic (water attracting).
When the cells were placed in a container containing oil and water, they are neatly placed at the interface between two liquids. Gilded side is facing the water boundary that is down. The substrate is slowly moved across the border between the media as a conveyor belt, and the elements neatly stuck to the gold-coated side solder coatings. Accuracy of the crystals was 98%. Installation was covered with epoxy resin to fix the elements on the ground.
Such device can install more than 20 000 crystals in a minute. Furthermore, elimination of dependence on the strength of gravity allowed to reduce the size of silicon crystals. Previously it could not be less than 100 microns.
A key feature of the experiment was to reduce the time to build to avoid oxidation of the crystals, which could decrease the surface energy and money assembling decline.
