Renewable Energy & Why We Should Seriously Consider It!

In this article, we are going to discuss renewable energy and talk about why we need to use it. Many people around the world are starting to become more aware of renewable energy and how we harness it. However, the large energy companies that we pay our hard earned money for to provide us with energy are still using non renewable energy sources to provide us with energy for our homes.

Such non renewable energy resources include the likes of coal and oil. These are resources that are found from the earth, but once consumed, can never be used again!

Renewable energy on the other hand comes from sources that can be used again and again indefinitely! Renewable energy such as the sun and wind are sources we can use to create endless amounts of energy. So as long as the earth stays intact, we will always have endless amounts of access to the energy produced by the natural elements from the sun and the wind.

However, it is important to remember that fossil fuels and other resources that are currently being used by the large energy companies are also destroying the planet. Unfortunately in this case, there are many beautiful things that are under critical danger such as plants and animals. Even our water is becoming polluted and the air that we breath is contaminated from burning coal and other substances that are used to provide us with energy for our homes.

The good news is that we all can help protect nature while saving on our own energy bills by simply generating our own energy from the sun and wind.

I suggest that you take a look at this site which will help educate you on all the matters concerned and show you what you can do to help contribute to a cleaner energy saving environment.

This is part 2 of that endless car fuel saving tips which I have started to help us tie over the money crunch.

Below is an added list of ways on achieving fuel efficiency, conserving gasoline and attaining cost savings the easy way:

Set Cruise Control at a Fixed Level of Consistent Fuel Usage when driving a stretch of long freeway (or highway). This helps to reduce the intermittent and inconsistent fuel injection by human manual driving which could cause greater wear and tear to your car.

Combine Several Short Trips Helps Save Fuel And Save Money. Once your engine is warmed up they generate less air pollution, so keep it running over a few so combining several short trips into one can make a big difference.

Park it in your Covered garage.Yes, you can save fuel and energy simply by parking your car in a covered garage whenever possible, especially in winter and summer. You would then avoid exposing your car to harsh winter snow and ice as well as the torturing summer sun. This helps you warm up the car faster in winter and cool it better in summer.

How to Be Greener – Recycling Tips

Reduce, reuse, recycle – you must have heard it time and again but it’s still the most logical and powerful protocol for material use. Let’s face it: we’re consumers and we go through a lot of stuff and generate a lot of garbage. Tossing goods into the recycling bin should be what we do after reducing our consumption and reusing existing materials. “Every day the city takes 3,500 tons a day to the landfills,” says Cynthia Ruiz of the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. “We have only one earth and only so much more room in the landfills, but we can divert hundreds of tons from the landfills with recycling.”

The best thing you can do is pay attention to the blue bin and see below about what you can recycle curbside. “We make it easy for residents – just put it in the blue bin and we do the rest,” says Ruiz. You can also bring your recyclables to city-operated or privately owned recycling centers or salvage yards. Depending on the type of salvage yard, you’ll find everything from architectural design elements to building supplies for your home remodel. There are also recycling services that come to you, either by directly picking up your recyclables or by providing boxes or envelopes for mailing in such things as toner cartridges, computers, and other electronics. Follow their directions for sorting, sending, and/or setting out materials.

A breakdown of what to recycle:

Paper:

  • White, colored shredded (unsoiled – no paper towels)
  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Catalogs
  • Paperback books
  • Phone books and directories
  • Paper board (cereal boxes, etc.)
  • Egg cartons
  • Cardboard (flattened)
  • Junk mail
  • Non-metallic wrapping paper
(Note: staples, paperclips, labels, and tape are allowed)

Cans and Foil:

  • Steel
  • Aluminum cans
  • Metal food trays

Glass:

  • Bottles, jars

Plastic:

  • #1 and #2 containers (beverage, milk, soda, water, detergent, shampoo, yogurt, margarine, etc.) county

 Know Your Plastic Numbers:

The plastics industry has developed a series of markers, usually seen on the bottom of plastic containers. These markers do not mean the plastic can be recycled, nor do they mean the container uses recycled plastic. Despite the confusing use of the chasing arrow symbol, these markers only identify the plastic type, that is, 1-PETE, 2-HDPE, 3-Vinyl, 4-LDPE, 5-PP, 6-PS, 7-Other.

Virtually everything made of plastic is marked with a code. Not all types can actually be recycled. Types 1 and 2 are widely accepted in container form, and type 4 is sometimes accepted in bag form. Code 7 is for mixed or layered plastic and has virtually no recycling potential. You should place in your bin only those types of plastic authorized by your local recycling agency.

Do Not Put These Items Curbside:

  • TVs (take to an electronics recycling center)
  • Computer monitors (take to an electronics recycling center)
  • Auto batteries (many service stations and city- or county-operated recycling centers will accept these)
  • Plastic bags (often not recyclable; check with your local waster hauler or on your countys’ recycling website)

Buying Recycled Products:

Finally, after dumping all that garbage, consider buying more recycled products. There are many benefits to buying recycled materials. Here are a few:

  • Save natural resources: recycling conserves land, reduces the need to drill for oil, mine for minerals, and desecrate
    forests.
  • Save energy: for example, producing aluminum by recycling takes 95% less energy than producing new aluminum from bauxite ore.
  • Save clean air and water: recycling reduces amount of pollutants emitted during resource extraction, processing, and manufacturing.
  • Save landfill space: recycling materials go into new products, not the landfill.
  • Save money and create jobs: recycling creates more jobs than landfills or incinerators; is often the least expensive waste management method for cities and towns.

Buildings and Energy Efficiency

Today, most of us by now, should have realized that our planet’s resources are finite and that we must conserve what we have and take seriously plans to use renewable and green energy sources to power our lives. We must all be conscious of our environment and take steps to cut down on wasted energy.

When considering purchasing or building a house it is important to consider how energy efficient the property is or will be, in the case of a new build. If a building has high efficiency it will not only be a financial advantage regarding heating or cooling bills but also kinder to our planet by cutting carbon emissions.

Whether a new building or a renovation is proposed energy efficiency can be calculated with two primary considerations.

1. The embodied energy of the materials used for the construction.
2. The overall energy that a building consumes annually relating to heat loss through walls, windows, floors and the roof.

Considering Construction Materials:

The embodied energy efficiency is taking into consideration not only the materials used but what energy is consumed in manufacturing the materials and transportation so it can be gathered that sourcing local materials would involve shorter transportation distances consequently lower fuel usage. During a renovation, for example, it would be prudent to reuse or reclaim material from the original construction this will avoid the use of new materials and the manufacturing and transportation processes involved in using those new materials.

A life cycle assessment would also be considered, this is to measure any impact on the environment of the source of the material, and the life span of the material when used in the construction, for example, using wood from sustainable forests against using light weight metal.

A Buildings Overall Energy Consumption:

Heat loss through walls, windows, floors and the roof is wasted energy and anything that can be done to prevent this will be advantageous to your pocket as well as to the environment. Insulation in these areas is of prime importance when constructing a new property or renovating and older one. Also heating, cooling and lighting methods must be considered.

One method of efficient heating is passive heating and this is where heat from the sun and external warm air is used to back up the property’s heating system thus reducing its work load. Passive cooling techniques can also be used such as constructing shades for windows and the growing of ever green trees to provide shade.

Passive lighting in the form of sky lights and light tubes that direct natural light into the property reducing the need of electrically derived illumination.

Other considerations that will add to a building’s efficiency is to use solar water heaters and photo voltaic solar panels to provide green electricity and reduce the necessity of generating power using fossil fuels.
In summary it can be gathered that taking all these things into consideration that although initial costs may be high, in the long term it is in the interest of all of us not only in financial terms but in environmental terms to be aware of our home’s energy efficiency.
