I’ve recently moved and appearantly there are only recycling drop off locations which no one uses. How do I go about getting recycling pick up on trash days?
Could you start a petition to get city council to provide recycling pick up?

Gadgets – The History

We create hundreds of gadgets every week and the majority of them are electronic and much more functional, but are they as useful as those ones before?

At the very beginning people where gathering fruit, fruits and vegetables they were finding to feed themselves. Then they started hunting using rocks to kill animals. The first gadget created at that time was a bow and arrow, hunters were the most successful and they also used them to protect themselves from there enemies.

Centuries later, when humans needed to transport materials they designed the wheel. Why so late? wasn’t it needed earlier. the result of their wheel creation, was the wheel barrow, the horse and cart, and then of course the car, many things we take for granted now use the wheel for example most mechanical devices gave wheels, even modern day ipods have wheels. Where we be without wheels well, most of us probably a lot fitter and slimmer, how many of us just get in the car and go without a thought, many I’m sure and of course these days there is the green issue, was there a green issue before the wheel was invented ? now there’s a thought

So, all the gadgets in history have effected our evolution, in modern times we creat hundreds of gadgets every year, many very useful, some well some are just gadgets !! The question is, are modern gadgets going to have such an effect or go down in history as the ones our Ancestors invented.

How Does Renewable Energy Meet Our Future Energy Needs?

The question of how we are going to meet our future energy needs is something that all energy suppliers have been thinking about for years and are now working out. With the five main sources of renewable energy already being tapped to create the electricity that we need more and more and crops like corn and soybeans being used to create the biofuels that are being used more and more there is no doubt that we will never run out of electricity or fuels to run our vehicles. The main question here is this: can we get rid of our long dependence on fossil fuels and switch totally over to the renewable energy sources that will more than meet our future energy needs? Let’s look at how each of the renewable energy sources will meet out future energy needs.

Solar Energy

Solar energy is one of the most useable and abundant of the renewable energy sources that we have on this planet. The next question that is likely to be coming is how viable is solar power as a future energy source when the Sun’s core will burn out in time thus rendering it useless. Well, put it this way, the Sun’s core will not be burning out any times in the next 100, 1,000 or even 10,000 years! It will take more like a few hundred thousand or a few million years before the Sun even gets close to extinction and goes supernova.

Wind Power

Given the fact that the wind the drives our weather patterns is so prevalent, there really is no question as to how viable wind power is as a future energy provider! As it is, wind power already provides a great deal of the fuel that powers many electric plants. This is why we have been seeing wind turbines popping up all over the place in the past few years. What do you think the wind mills in Holland and the Netherlands are there for? These wind mills aren’t only for decoration; they are actually part of the plan to harness the power of the wind to meet the future energy needs of that area of Europe.

Water/Hydroelectric Power

Using the power of water and waterfalls in creating hydroelectric power is one of the future energy sources that no one can really say is not that effective. When you stop to think about the pure, sheer power that running water possesses and passes along to us in the form of currents; it is any surprise that this renewable energy source is also one of the most dependable sources for our future energy needs? Only having all of the water evaporating and bodies of water disappear will change this.

Biofuels

Biofuels are another great renewable source that can easily meet our future energy needs. This is due to the fact that biofuels are made from corn, soybeans/soybean oil and vegetable oil. How’s that for renewable energy folks?!

Ensure the Waste in Your Recycling Bin Doesn’t End Up in Landfill

Recycling all types of plastics can be a costly process as it requires hand-sorting by trained staff. For this reason, some materials reclamation facilities will not be able to recycle all types of plastic. You should contact your local recycling facilities or waste carrier to find out which types of plastic they are currently recycling and whether this is likely to change in the future.

Can tetra packs (drinks cartons) be recycled?

Tetra packs can be recycled, but again you will need to check with your waste carrier and local recycling plant to see whether they have the facilities to do so.

Does my recycled waste end up in a landfill site?

Once your recyclable waste has been collected and brought to a materials reclamation facility it is then sorted using both automated and manual sorting processes. Any waste that cannot be recycled or waste that is too contaminated to be recycled, will be sent to landfill. You can reduce the risk of waste being sent to landfill by ensuring it is clean (see below) and recyclable by your local facility. 

Frequently asked questions about recycling 

We spend time sorting all our waste into different recycling bins and our waste carrier tips it all into the same container, does this mean it is not being recycled?

Many materials reclamation facilities will sort the recyclable waste upon arrival to the plant using a variety of manual and automated processes. For this reason, some waste carriers transport all the recyclable waste streams together.

Separating waste at the source (i.e. in the workplace) is good practice and can make people think more about what waste they are producing and where it ends up. However, in some instances it may be an easier option to have mixed recycling bins where all recyclable waste is collected. There is a greater risk of cross-contamination and confusion when collecting all mixed recycling in one bin so you will need to be sure there is clear signage and labelling of what can and can’t be placed in the recycling bins.

Why should I wash my recyclable waste?

Washing your recyclable waste will reduce the chances of contamination and ensure your waste is recycled. In many materials reclamation facilities the waste is partly hand sorted and consequently any contaminated materials or materials that cannot be recycled will be sent to landfill. Ensuring your recyclable waste is clean will also make storage prior to recycling easier by reducing odours in your recycling bins. Crushing cans, plastic bottles and cardboard boxes will also increase storage capacity and therefore increase the amount of waste you can recycle at any one time.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is really the generation of power in useful forms from natural sources such as the sun (solar energy), wind (air currents), water (hydro, waves, currents etc.), biological (biomass) and the earth itself (geothermal). This is an inexhaustible supply and technologies are evolving to make use of these processes for conversion to usable energy.

One advantage unique to renewable energy but not fully appreciated is the phonemon of community renewable power project. Community renewables projects can be a great force for social cohesion, and they can create a wide range of social benefits that transcend the economics of a particular project. These advantages include decreased dependence on foreign natural gas and oil, a power infrastructure that is far less subject to large-scale disruption or terrorism because of its distributed and diverse nature, local control of generation facilities, creation of much needed high-quality jobs in rural areas, and a supplemental revenue stream for agricultural community members that allows them to maintain their rural lifestyle. These projects include projects as diverse as willow coppicing and gasifying the wood chip produced, using power plants built mostly on farms, to community anaerobic digesters processing the food and organic waste of a community feeding electric power into the local power grid and hot water via CHP schemes into their homes for low cost heating.

Wind power is an example of a power type which can take jobs and revenue to remote communities which have otherwise been declining. A large wind farm can create dozens of secure long term jobs.

The relative price of renewable fuels is now much lower, so the incentives are there to invest. Wind power is a typical example where investors are receiving good yields and are likely to do so for many years to come. The term alternative is used to contrast with fossil fuels according to some sources. Wind turbines can be situated on land or off-shore providing many more sites.

Wind energy is the fastest growing energy resource in the world and can economically produce scalable renewable power to meet growing energy demands. In the US, wind power could produce up to 25% of our nation’s energy needs and we think this is a good thing.

Biomass energy comes from plants and trees. Wood is the largest source of biomass energy. However this form of energy can be implemented badly, and if it is it can be inefficient and destructive. One example is if biomass is burnt but the forests are not replanted.

To power a large proportion of the United States by biomass, vast areas would need to be taken from food production and harvested annually to feed our energy cravings while food prices would still rise higher and higher.

Biodiesel use is small now, but its use in diesel engines and for heating is increasing. Biodiesel and bioethanol do produce carbon dioxide when they are combusted in a car engine. However, crops used to make it do re-absorb that carbon dioxide as they grow. This biofuel is competitive with regular diesel fuel within a local market. A market worldwide for this product of methane is developing very quickly. Europe is now the largest biodiesel market in the world.

Biodiesel and ethanol, for example, is being combined with gasoline for cleaner transportation fuel.

While we are on the subject of combining technologies to give useful results. Sunlight is being collected and is being combined with standard electric lighting to produce hybrid solar lighting, a new development in solar technology.

Geothermal Energy can be used much more than it has been to date. Geologically derived energy of this sort is produced by heat from sources below the Earth’s surface. For electricity generation, steam created by these underground heat sources is used to spin turbines. Geothermal energy uses hot water deep within the earth’s crust to spin turbines and produce power 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It produces few carbon emissions and can re-inject used-water back into the earth to be used again, making it fully sustainable.

Solar power is generated when utilities are in highest demand – in the middle of the day. In terms of the energy to make these solar cells, it is said that in about the same time it takes to pay them off – four to five years – the cells provide back the energy that was required to make them in the first place.

One place in which solar energy is being heavily used is Hong Kong. Solar energy is abundant in Hong Kong’s sunny climate, and easy to use. However, you can consider replacing your existing water heater with a new solar hot water heating system located on the rooftop of your building, even if not in a hot country. The reduction in available solar energy between equator and poles is not a great as most people seem to think. Solar thermal power stations operate in the USA and Spain, and the largest of these is the 354 MW SEGS power plant in the Mojave Desert, but solar is still worthwhile in more temperate climates.

Finally, there is the potential for much more thermal electric energy to be captured, where the sun light is reflected and focused using a huge parabolic mirror. This reflected light energy can then be used to heat water to create steam which can be used to drive a turbine to produce electricity just like in a conventional power plant.

Green Energy is not just a clean way to run the world, but also a cheaper way that is much less intertwined with politics. No one can own the wild, sun, or oceans; which means that there is no owner attempting to make immense profits off of power. These clean sources are the best bet for a clean and successful future for a world that is presently feeling the effects of a failing world economy. All people need to do is convert to Green Energy to help the world, and help themselves. So convert now and set an example for a power hungry world!

Nashville Kicks Off Earth Day Celebration Early

Next week marks the 40th annual Earth Day and Nashville will start celebrations early with a free daylong event at Centennial Park on Saturday.

Observed on April 22, Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin established the observance to bring environmental issues to the political forefront. He’s written that the movement toward the observance began in 1962 when he convinced President John F. Kennedy to launch a tour across the United States to raise environmental awareness.

The tour was not successful in putting environmental concerns on the national political agenda, but Sen. Nelson continued to speak about the growing crisis – often on college campuses. He said it was college campus protests against the Vietnam War that made him think students and grassroots efforts were the way to get attention for environmental issues.

“If we could tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause, we could generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda,” said Sen. Nelson writing about Earth Day’s history. “Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

Earth Day observances are held around the world now and organizers estimate that more than 1 billion people will celebrate this year.

Nashville holds its 9th annual Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park, an appropriate location as Centennial Park was the beginning of Nashville’s public park system.

This year’s festival, with the theme “Strike a Chord,” will help the community take another step toward Mayor Karl Dean’s goal of making Nashville the greenest city in the Southeast. The free event will include more than 60 booths sponsored by community and environmental groups and government agencies with hands-on activities for all ages.

The celebration also features two areas with live music. A youth stage starts up at 11 a.m. and continues through 1 p.m. with a percussion ensemble, step performances, Polynesian dance and others.

At 1 p.m., performers hit the Main Stage and continue throughout the day. The lineup includes Homemade Water, The Apache Relay, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek and banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck Acoustic with Friends.

Folks can take part in scavenger hunt; a youth area where children can make reused and recycled eco art and crafts, and more; and the Food and Farming area with lots of exhibitors and workshops ranging from foraging for wild edibles and growing your own food to preserving seasonal foods and composting kitchen scraps for a better garden.

The event also features a Green Model Home where experts at E3 Innovate demonstrate how easy it is to reduce your home’s energy needs. The model home will have examples of eco-friendly interior and exterior materials, and renewable energy systems such as a geothermal heat pump and solar panels.

Another area lets you donate your broken-down bike or bike accessories to help kids learn bike mechanics and bike safety and possibly take home a free ride. ReCycle Your Cycle accepts tax-deductible donations of bicycles and related items on behalf of Oasis Center.

And the Merchant Village features booths and vendors with environmentally-friendly items such as locally-made clothing, organic products, locally-made food, daily-use consumables, environmental publications, and other green items.

So whether it’s for the music, the food, the free family activities, the money-saving tips, or the chance to teach your kids (and yourself) how to live greener, be sure to head to Centennial Park on Saturday.

How do recycling plants separate different types of plastics?

Better yet, how do recycling plants separate the different materials. I know that if you were to mix two different types of plastics, that they would not be able to be re-used(even though I heard of a new technology where someone was able to mix two different types of plastics to form a super strong one). How do they separate plastics 1-5 and number 7? Also, how do they separate the adhesives and other materials on recyclable products like glass and plastic bottles?
