The Advantage of Renewable Energy, and the Challenges

As fossil fuels diminish, the advantage of renewable energy is quickly becoming more understood. The population of the earth is growing and with that growth additional pressure is placed on the already depleting energy sources commonly used like fossil fuels.

While there are plenty of advantages to Mother Earth that renewable energy sources provide, there come some disadvantages as well. In order to shift from our dependence on fossil fuels, we need to discover ways to minimize the challenges so that it becomes more possible for everyone who wishes to use renewable energy sources.

The main sources of renewable energy include solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower.

Solar Energy

One of the most utilized forms of renewable energy is solar power collection. Solar power harvests the sun radiation and heat and converts these into electricity that can be used to power a home or business. The excess energy can also be fed into the electrical grid of a local utility company for credit and possible payment. While solar energy has very little impact on the Earth when installed on existing structures, there are some limitations associated with its use.

Solar energy can only be harvested optimally when the sun is shining. Changes in weather like rain, snow or cloudy weather can reduce or eliminate the amount of energy harvested. In some parts of the world, solar panels are not optimal due to consistent bad weather and few sunny days.

Wind Energy

For some parts of the world, wind energy is a fantastic source of supplemental electrical energy. Wind farms are popping up left and right collecting enough energy to support entire communities and small towns. While wind farms leave a very small impact on the Earth, the upkeep and initial cost is often higher than other alternative energy choices.

The upfront investment for harvesting wind energy can range from $40,000 to $70,000 for a 10 kilowatt system. On average, it is estimated that a wind farm will break even on these upfront costs in about 17 years. Another cost associated with wind energy systems is maintenance. While professional wind farms hire technicians to maintain the turbines, a residential system may be costly to maintain.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is considered one of the least polluting types of alternative energy. The advantage of renewable energy harvested as heat is the lower cost of maintenance with a high expected energy yield. The upfront cost of establishing a geothermal plant is huge and there is always the chance that the heated energy source is not as renewable as once thought.

Advanced drilling techniques are needed to establish a connection with the Earth’s prime energy source, heat. The heat is harvested through deep holes in the Earth which leaves some questioning the true impact on the planet. Though the carbon footprint of geothermal farming is minimal, the area of ground needed to establish a working plant will certainly destroy local animal and wildlife habitat.

Hydropower Energy

The power of water has long been used to produce electricity. The energy is often converted with 80% to 90% efficiency which makes hydropower one of most beneficial alternative energy sources. The advantage of renewable energy is a constant supply of power and hydropower is no different. While hydropower is effective wherever it is used, some areas with infrequent rainfall and rivers that dry up during the hot seasons would probably not benefit from hydropower generators.

Anyone who is environmentally minded should be thinking about green power especially with the depletion of fossil fuels being imminent. Aside from the fact that we are simply running out of them and the price is becoming exorbitant, fossil fuels pollute the environment and there is just no excuse to be rely on them going forward.

Green energy sources are a much better bet for the future. Energy from these sources is sustainable and renewable – things like the water, the wind in the sun will never run dry and if we use them properly and responsibly we can be assured to have an infinite supply of energy that will not harm our environment.

Green power sources include the following:

Water

There’s actually several applications of water when it comes to power. You’re probably familiar with the Hoover Dam, which produces energy by running power through the Dam. In a similar application, one can actually use the current of a river to produce power. Additionally, scientists are now researching using the power of the tide as well is the power of waves for sustainable energy production.

Sun

Solar power is probably what comes to mind first when you think of renewable energy. This type of power uses the radiation from the sun to produce energy. Solar power can be as simple as having solar panels on your home or as complicated as a solar power plant that generates electricity for a town. Solar power relies on solar panels that collect the radiation from the sun and turned into energy. Once collected, it can be used for your home’s needs right away or stored in batteries for later use.

Wind

Windmills have been used for ages, but today’s wind turbines are a far cry from the scenic windmills of Holland. Be that as it may, wind can be a powerful energy producer and there are many turbine farms, as well as individual turbines for single family homes, throughout the US that help in renewable energy production that doesn’t produce any pollutants.

Biomass

Biomass actually refers to any biological material either living or recently dead. Technically fossil fuels could be considered biomass but they’ve been dead for so long that their structure is changed and they are not quite in the same category as things like wood. Burning wood or sugarcane is considered biomass fuel and since we can replant these things they are considered renewable. While they do cause carbon dioxide to be released into the air, the live versions of these actually absorb carbon dioxide so if you are replanting as much wood as you burn the net pollution would be negligible.

Looking towards the future, green power is definitely the way to go. Certainly, we haven’t researched these alternatives as much as we should have in the past but now it is obvious that we must come up with a different solution to meet our energy needs. Hopefully research will increase on all these fronts and we will soon be able to produce energy in a clean and renewable manner that will serve us for generations to come.

This company will sell power and equipment to the rural community. The company will also sell biofuel stoves and lanterns. This will attract rural people to grow jatropha in large quantity and build capacity for replacing imported fuel and have a potential for export.

In general:

The huge market we have for renewable energy is very active and they would like to install solar. Some are put off because of the high cash purchase cost. They always want to pay for the products and take it with them the same day.

This means that a company must have enough capital to stock solar systems and accessories. The company should also have a well trained workforce as stand by. This needs a company to have enough capital to invest both in stock of various capacities.

The disadvantage local vending companies have is renewable energy systems are capital intensive and to stock them needs a very big capital investment that they do not have. The introduction of rural electrification program solves this problem by enabling the Sacco to pay the vendor upfront while they collect from the farmer on easy installments over a period of 1 to 3 years.

We expect to introduce off grid power supply systems with bio fuel genset as back up. We also intend to encourage local farmers to grow Jatropha as a cash bio fuel crop to supply the needs of the biofuel genset and other bio-diesel engine driven machinery.

We have taken deep interest in Jatropha as a cash crop and source of bio fuel. In our extensive research on this plant we find that it is a suitable plant for the country’s development and a means of a forestation, restoring of soil quality, poverty alleviation and a better health for the people in the villages.

3 years from now we should see several renewable energy off grid farms installed in village locations in different part of Uganda distributing power to the village households. With several jatropha farms in these areas, we should see several extraction and processing facilities at different strategic locations in the rural community where farmers can bring their Jatropha seeds for extraction into bio diesel. This bio diesel would be used to power their back up generators, fuel transport vehicles for their produce, and tractors for large-scale cultivation of farms. We also see conversion workshops being set up in Uganda to change fossil fuel diesel driven vehicles to run on straight vegetable oil.

We should see villages well lit and with different development projects and established cottage industries making most of the day to day used products. Fetching and using of firewood & charcoal in both the villages and the city and its resultant danger to health should be a thing of the past. Uganda should be able to produce fuel and blend fuel with fossil fuels.

Uganda cannot distribute power to the villages relying on the national grid. The way forward is to get distributed renewable energy power supply systems to tap on the country’s vast renewable energy potential to supply power to its people. We must source the technology since the funds to achieve this are in place.

Local economic impact of the business

The bio fuel stove will change the lives of Ugandan people who have been using firewood, charcoal, gas and electricity for cooking. The better, cheaper, environmentally friendly and health advanced cooking system using bio fuel stove. Jatropha as a cash bio fuel crop will increase people’s purchasing power. This will provide jobs to the youth and stop their migration to the cities in search for jobs. This will reduce on the current congestion of the cities.

Earth Day 2010 and Global Awareness

Spring 2010 is approaching and there’s a lot of buzz around topics like the economy, taxation, global poverty, restoration in Haiti/Chile, and lastly, green awareness. With spring, Earth Day also draws nearer (April 22nd); as individuals, we must remember and realize the importance of global warming and all of its implications. Subsequent topics discussed as of late include space travel/burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and green building. As nations like Haiti and Chile prepare for rebuilding and new construction, there are many things to consider when advancing. Moving towards cleaner, greener infrastructure is vital in ensuring a successful restoration campaign.

The U.S. Green Building Council is a 501(3)(c) non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everybody. It’s one of the many organizations playing its role in green progression. Heavy discussion lies on green topics, especially the more recent ones like space travel; others include deforestation, green crops, clothing, energy, and much more. It’s important that we as individuals/citizens stay up-to-date on important global topics like warming. As organizations like the CGI (Clinton Global Initiative), AFH (Architecture for Humanity), and the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) conducts sustainability campaigns and enforce strict green constraints, our world will continue to become a better, cleaner place. To touch on just some of the things that AFH covers:

ï Alleviating poverty and providing access to water, sanitation, power and essential services
ï Bringing safe shelter to communities prone to disaster and displaced populations
ï Rebuilding community and creating neutral spaces for dialogue in post-conflict areas
ï Mitigating the effects of rapid urbanization in unplanned settlements
ï Creating spaces to meet the needs of those with disabilities and other at-risk populations
ï Reducing the footprint of the built environment and addressing climate change

As polluters continue to buy their way out of Carbon Cuts globally, and large organizations continue to dump their waste into lakes, ponds and rivers, communities and must play their role in ensuring sustainability; organizations like the CGI, AFH, and USGBC provide repercussion and policy change for acts such as the above. The Advantages of Renewable Energy

We live in a time where the almighty dollar is stretched to its limits. Foreclosures and unemployment are at an all time high. Each day the planet we live on is being damaged by the cars we drive and production of toxic materials. So we cut back on our spending. We take on more than one job. We recycle. We try to be more conscience about the things we use that can be harmful to the environment.

The questions we keep asking ourselves is, “Why does this feel like its never enough? Why does my financial situation stay the same no matter how hard I try? Why does the environment continue to get worse?” So, what are we to do?

Well, to change the way things have gone, we need to change some things that got us there. I am, by no means, a financial adviser. What I am is just an ordinary, everyday person trying to exist. I actually am an electrical contractor and have been for 18 years. So, we’re basically covering two areas that we talked about earlier: saving money, and helping the environment. Now, the up-front cost of installing renewable energy systems are a little more than traditional systems, but in the long run, it more than pays for itself. The government is also giving tax rebates back for installing these type systems, some as high as 30%!

There are also many means of building and creating your own form of renewable energy, such as solar panels, wind generators, and micro hydropower. A lot of these can be done for little money, and help create energy on smaller scales.

Renewable Energy Sector Boosted by Oil Price Rises and Climate Change

Against a global backdrop of rocketing oil prices and concerns about climate change and security of energy supply, interest in renewables has never been more intense. Renewable energy is energy from natural sources – the wind, sun, geothermal, waves and tides, and water – which, unlike fossil fuels, such as coal, gas and oil, will never run out. Furthermore, most renewable energy technologies produce little or no greenhouse gases – the main cause of climate change.

The key challenges with renewable energy are how to extract it, turn it into usable energy and deliver it to where it is needed. Not renowned for being the sunniest of places, the UK has some of Europe’s best wind power resources and is a world leader in marine power technology. Although wave and tidal power technologies are still in their infancy, the Carbon Trust estimates that marine power sources could provide up to 15% of the UK’s electricity. In May 2008, the world’s first commercial tidal turbine was installed in Strangford Narrows, Northern Ireland providing power to 1,000 homes.

Growing at a global rate of 30%, wind power is the most mature and cost-effective renewable energy technology: worldwide in 2008 there was 121 GW of installed wind capacity, with the UK accounting for some 4 GW of installed capacity by the end of 2009. Under the EU Renewable Energy Directive, the UK government has signed up to a legally binding target of generating 15% of UK energy from renewables by 2020. This is a seven-fold increase from the 2008 level of just over 2%. Renewable power production in the UK is at a very low level compared to other countries such as Denmark, Spain, Germany and the US. There is a mountain to climb if the 15% target is to be met.

The UK’s Renewable Energy Strategy 2009, published in July 2009, sets out how the government plans to achieve its ambitious renewable energy target. Specific objectives include generating more than 30% of electricity from renewable sources (compared to around 5.5% today), mostly on- and off-shore wind, but also hydro, biomass and marine power technologies. Transport energy from renewables will need to increase from the current 2.6% to 10%, and 12% of heat energy is projected to come from sources such as biomass, solar and biogas.

Along with carbon capture and storage technologies, carbon emissions trading, new nuclear capabilities, and energy saving and efficiency measures, renewable energy is part of the government’s plan to shift the UK to a low-carbon, more self-sufficient energy economy that addresses both climate change and security of supply issues.

If the strategy achieves its goals, the UK will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 750 million tonnes between now and 2030. Fossil fuel consumption will decrease by around 10% and gas imports by 20-30% by 2020. The strategy predicts that achieving the targets could create half a million jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2020, and leverage £100 billion worth of investment opportunities.

Wind Power

There are two main reasons why wind power and wind mill/wind turbine generated electricity are considered to be green energy: they will not be gone any time too soon and they do not cause any more pollution to or of the environment around us.
