Green Right Now

What comes to mind when you think of green Keds? A pair of Keds that are green, right?

Think again: the iconic American-made sneaker (did you know the term sneaker was coined for Keds?) that has been manufactured since 1916 is breaking out of the rubber-sole mold. They have launched a new “green” collection this week.

How are the new Keds eco-conscious? Keds says:

The uppers and linings are 100 percent organic cotton

The outer soles are made of recycled rubber

The insoles are made with recycled fibers and non-toxic chemicals

The shoes are made of non-toxic ink or dyes, and they’re made with water-based cements. The hardware is nickel-free

The boxes and tissue they come in made of are 100 pecent post-consumer waste.

As part of the eco-shoe rollout, Emily Sugihara, whose Baggu line of trendy re-usable shopping bags is quite hot, has partnered with Keds and will show up in their advertising campaign. She’s also offering green tips and suggestions on the Keds Web site, Kedsgoesgreen. In exchange for Sugihara’s involvement, Keds has made a donation to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Plus, for every pair sold, Keds pledges to plant a tree with help from the Arbor Day Foundation.

The shoes are available online now, in black, white and — of course, green — and cost $55 a pair (a bit more costly than your standard Keds). A second style of green keds, the Meadow Mock Toe, will be available Saturday, and will also sell for $55. You can also find them at Nordstrom stores across the country.
